If there is one thing I am beginning to learn, it is to not trust major companies, even when they advertise for safe, clean products. Stacey Malkan's video brought that to light. It makes me wonder how is it possible in this day and age, and within the United States to continue to put products out there that can harm our bodies? Why use these harmful chemicals when these same products can be made without them? Is it less expensive to do so? Knowing the information I do now lead me into a little research. Using the safe cosmetics database I was able to find some useful information about some of the personal care products I use on a daily basis. I decided to hone in on things I use on a daily basis. The first product I looked up was my Dove Men's body wash. On a scale of 1-10 it was given a 6, a moderate hazard. It turns out, I have been putting a carcinogen on my body everyday for about 2 years now (since I found this body wash I have solely been using this). The even bigger concern is the fumes from the product. The fragrance rated an 8/10 in terms of organ system toxicity (eyes, lungs, and skin). Needless to say I was very surprised to find this information, and now have decided to discontinue my usage of the Dove body wash whilst looking for a cleaner alternative.
The next product I decided to look up was my crest complete toothpaste. After the finding from the previous product, I braced myself for impact. Turns out, crest toothpaste screw pretty well. Only a 3/10, low toxicity. I can let out a huge sigh of relief! This tool should be used by everyone. All people should know about the toxicity of the products they use and those that are moderately to severely toxic should be pulled from the shelves in my opinion, because they can be made with toxins.

Hi Jordan!
ReplyDeleteWow cannot believe your Dove Men's Bodywash had such a high score. When I think of Dove I picture white clean ads and people smiling. I'm guessing those people would not be smiling if they were putting carcinogens on their skin every day. It really makes you think how companies can get away with slowly poisoning us....
Also, the toothpaste sounds a little concerning, even though it only had a score of 3 you are putting it into your mouth and whether you like it or not you are going to digest a little bit of it.
