I really love the idea of green chemistry, and it is so refreshing to read about greener safer options. This course has been filled with so many negatives around chemicals in materials that we come into contact with everyday, so reading about green chemistry proves that our society can help reverse some of the damage we have done to ourselves and the planet. The 12 principles focus a lot on prevention, which is something I have been advocating for throughout this course as it seems we tend to spend a lot of money on correcting things rather than preventing them. Hopefully this effort behind green chemistry is just the beginning of all of the earths inhabitants cleaning up our planet.
In San Francisco, there are 3 sewage treatment facilities. There is the North Point Wet Weather Facility located at Bay Street and the Embarcadero. It was built in 1951 and it is important to note that this facility is only active during wet weather, which I find is very interesting since it barley rains in SF. There is also the Oceanside Treatment Plant which was built in 1993. it receives about 20% of the cities flows. The last one is the Southeast Treatment Plant. It was built in 1952 and treats the other 80% of the cities flows. Needless to say, the Southeast Treatment Plant is much larger than the others and does the bulk of the cities wage work for SF residents.
Jordan,
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely refreshing to read about ways that we can help reduce and prevent the use of harmful chemicals from entering the environment. I agree prevention is key and would help save a lot of resources wasted on fixing things.
Jordan,
ReplyDeleteYes the ideas of green chemistry sound great! I wish that every company would adopt these principles, out planet would be in a much better state.
