Obesogens

Seasonal Foods : I find myself to be lucky to live in a state like California where so much produce is produced and where the majority of its inhabitants are thinking progressively and organically. There are tons of locally grown vendors and they are easy to find. There are also lots or produce currently in season. To many to list really but some of them include apples, carrots, cabbage, grapes, green beans etc.. This time of year is prime time for produce in season. I really like the idea of integrating seasonal food with hospital menus. This would ensure that the patients within the hospital are getting local food, and the most nutritious foods available at that time.

Obesogens : I had never before heard of the concept of obesogens, but the idea of them having an effect on rates of obesity makes sense to me, and I do believe that "obesogens" play a role in obesity rates. It all sort of stems back to my idea of the world being in a chemical imbalance. Much of this coming from pesticides and artificial chemicals that have been introduced into the environment.

Bisphenol A : This obesogen is found in medical devices and in the lining of some canned foods. It is found in a lot of the hard plastics that we use on a daily basis and is linked to lower fertility and other health problems including Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes. I'm still amazed at what we have allowed to be put into the products we use on a daily basis. It is hard to not get a slight feeling of losing hope in humanity. On the flip side, I know the minority are responsible, the majority of people in the world are on the same page as you and I.

  1. Hi Jordan,
Incorporating seasonal food into your diet is so fun! It let's you play around with recipes and try new foods. We are so locally to be in california where we have an abundance of different foods.

  2. Hi Jordan,

From everything we are learning in this class, it is hard not to think that to some degree we are failing our own people...the businesses, government and policy makers could be doing more. Although, I agree, it is encouraging to know that most people are trying to do their best and with increased awareness and knowledge with social media/internet, it is happening.

  3. Hi Jordan,
I agree with you that I too also feel very lucky to live in CA. I remember couple years ago when my grandma was visiting from New York, she had asked me to take her to a walnut farm because she has heard that if you want to see a walnut farm, you have to go to California. Unfortunately, it wasn't the season then and we couldn't go to one but it looks like month of Sept and October are prime time for produce. I see so many 'in season' on my list...

Sewage Treatment Facilities

In San Francisco, there are 3 sewage treatment facilities. There is the North Point Wet Weather Facility located at Bay Street and the Embarcadero. It was built in 1951 and it is important to note that this facility is only active during wet weather, which I find is very interesting since it barley rains in SF. There is also the Oceanside Treatment Plant which was built in 1993. it receives about 20% of the cities flows. The last one is the Southeast Treatment Plant. It was built in 1952 and treats the other 80% of the cities flows. Needless to say, the Southeast Treatment Plant is much larger than the others and does the bulk of the cities wage work for SF residents.

Environmental Justice

After reading up on the information about environmental injustice,  the only thing, and most recent example of this, would be the Flint Michigan water crisis. The United States has a long way to go in terms of equality. This country was basically founded on racism and one can find the evidence even through legislation throughout the years. In terms of Flint, one also has to think that if the water were to be found toxic in a white area, the issue would have been resolved immediately. Since Flint happens to be predominantly black, they still to this day don't have clean water. This is absolutely unacceptable to me. Within the black community, there is a distrust for the government and health officials, and who can blame them? They have been lied to, fooled and mistreated so many times over the years that now it is a cultural thing within the community. The only way to fix this is over a long time while bridging the gap of equality.

Personal Care Products (Ken Cook Video)

After watching the videos and in particular, the one with Ken Cook, I could not help but be angry. Angry at the how greedy corporations can be, all for money. One of the more powerful messages I got from Ken in the video was that there are several laws in place that protect companies, but we need laws that protect people. This could not be more true and why isn't there being more done to protect people. Seeing the incidence of birth defect and diseases continue to rise years after years, one can only come to the conclusion of chemical imbalance. This is the only thing that makes sense. I just hope that people continue to educate themselves, voice their opinions, and influence government with data and knowledge.
