Last night, I decided to have some steak and I sautéed some squash and cooked some rice for the sides. Using the Whats on my Food website, I was able to find all of the items I had for dinner listed here. My findings were disturbing. On the squash, the USDA has found 40 pesticide residues. Some of which are carcinogens, neurotoxins, developmental toxins and reproductive toxins. On the steak, 6 pesticide residues were found, and 15 residues on the rice. I look at our current system here in America and think it is poorly regulated and has little regard for the consumer. The only thing of concern for the producers is money. They'll do whatever they can to protect their crop even if it means poisoning the consumers. We honestly need to be more like Europe. We need scientists who study the crops and we need a government who will then use that information to decide on what to use and what not top use. There simply needs to be more regulation in order to ensure the health of the environment and the consumers.
In San Francisco, there are 3 sewage treatment facilities. There is the North Point Wet Weather Facility located at Bay Street and the Embarcadero. It was built in 1951 and it is important to note that this facility is only active during wet weather, which I find is very interesting since it barley rains in SF. There is also the Oceanside Treatment Plant which was built in 1993. it receives about 20% of the cities flows. The last one is the Southeast Treatment Plant. It was built in 1952 and treats the other 80% of the cities flows. Needless to say, the Southeast Treatment Plant is much larger than the others and does the bulk of the cities wage work for SF residents.
Hi Jordan,
ReplyDeleteWow your dinner sounds delish! But can you believe that there are so many pesticides on foods? In mind mind there was only a handful, not 40! It makes me cringe when I think about how many I potentially consume A DAY!
Hi Jordan,
ReplyDeleteIt is a little disturbing how many chemicals are on our foods, especially when you're meal sounds so healthy. And then you find out what is really on the foods, and it is like we're being cheated! I think Europe is a lot better at regulating the pesticides they use. When I found out they test every single one to make sure it is not harmful to the environment and humans, it makes me wonder how we are so backwards here.
